Florals: The trend that never goes out of fashion

Florals are timeless… that’s a fact. And as we find ourselves indoors, it’s more important than ever to bring the outside in! Whether that be treating yourself to a beautiful bouquet or a S&S Periwinkle Lounge Set.
While Miranda Priestly notoriously exclaims “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking” in the Devil Wears Prada, we utterly disagree! Floral patterns resprout each year in reinvented ways making them a timeless addition to any wardrobe. They graced the Haute Couture runways once again this year with Chanel showcasing beautiful flower crowns, 3D daisies and pastel floral embroidery all upon a petal-strewn catwalk. And we couldn’t get enough of Netflix’s Bridgerton, which served us iconic Renaissance style dresses with beautiful flowery details. It’s left us desperately longing for the cottage-core lifestyle: tea parties, romantic picnics in wildflower meadows and warmer weather!

The fact is florals have been around for centuries in fashion. Ancient Greek and Roman women were known to wear fragrant head crowns and garlands made from flowers, leaves and herbs during special occasions. The Medieval period is when we start to see floral patterns sewn with gold and silver threads onto the velvet gowns of the wealthy in Europe. As the silk-weaving industry grew, elaborate scenes of nature on clothing were the sign of extravagance and royalty. Notably, floral trends had a revival in the 1970s with the Flower Power Movement which saw large prints in neon colours. Nowadays, as we aim to move away from fast-fashion trends, the need for timeless items is vital. It goes without saying, florals have never gone out of fashion and… sorry, Miranda… they never will!
