The amount of underwear you should own is totally dependent on personal preference, lifestyle and laundry habits. Generally speaking, it’s recommended to have enough knickers to last you a minimum of a week between laundry loads. This ensures you always have a clean and fresh pair to wear each day, without having to turn your drawers upside down.
If you’re looking for a hard and fast answer, between 7-10 pairs is a common guideline. This would allow you to go a week, or just over, without putting a wash on. But it completely depends on how often you like to do your laundry. If you prefer an extended period of time between loads, then opt for a 2 week supply of your favourite undies.
Ultimately, personal preference is a big factor when deciding the ideal number of knickers for you. Comfort level, laundry loads and daily lifestyle and habits are all things to consider when working out the magic number.
Factors that may affect how much underwear you need
Daily lifestyle habits that affect how many pairs of underwear you should include things like exercise, and occasions that require particular knicker shapes. Working out daily? Then you might want to consider increasing your supply of pants to allow for multiple pairs per day. Running out mid-way through the week is simply not an option for the more active among us.
Wanting out-and-out comfort in the day but something with less coverage to wear with that little black dress in the evening? Then it’s worth considering a selection of shapes within your supply. Original Knicker by day, thong by night is a common combination for those with big weekend plans.
It is also worth considering the selection of colours within your collection. Spring and summer call for lighter shades to pair with airy linens, so diversifying from an all black or bold colour collection is always worth doing to allow for every outfit style. There is a time and a place for nude thongs, whether we like it or not.
What’s the average amount of underwear for women?
We asked over 1,000 women what’s in their drawers to gauge the go-to number from our audience. 45% of women said they own over 20 pairs of underwear followed by 27% who own 11-20 pairs. 5% of women own over 40 pairs!
And what about bras?
In general, the same rules can be applied to bras with the overall number being a little less than the bottom-half. It is recommended to have 3-5 everyday bras, and a couple of speciality bras for different occasions. Your everyday bras need to supply maximum comfort and your speciality bras need to meet the needs of the occasion. Sports bras and date-night bras are two examples with differing requirements. Our go-to daily bra? The T-shirt Bra.
